Convectively-Coupled High-Frequency Atmospheric Waves Triggered Kerala Floods in 2018 and 2019

چکیده

Floods have repeatedly battered the South Indian state, Kerala, as a result of unprecedented heavy rainfall during Boreal Summers, in recent years. The state witnessed large departures from normal 2018 and 2019. Previous studies seldom adopted systematic approach to understand phenomenon responsible for recurrent extreme events. Hence, this study, based on spectral methods, identifies characteristic propagation high-frequency equatorial waves atmosphere, which travelled near tropical west Pacific east coast Africa. These stimulated intense convection ensured sufficient availability moisture over are hence Kerala Floods.

Convectively Coupled Equatorial Waves: Analysis of Clouds and Temperature in the Wavenumber–Frequency Domain

A wavenumber-frequency spectrum analysis is performed for all longitudes in the domain 158S–158N using a long (;18 years) twice-daily record of satellite-observed outgoing longwave radiation (OLR), a good proxy for deep tropical convection. The broad nature of the spectrum is red in both zonal wavenumber and frequency. By removing an estimated background spectrum, numerous statistically signifi...

Impact of atmospheric convectively coupled equatorial Kelvin waves on upper ocean variability

Convectively coupled Kelvin waves (CCKWs) are atmospheric weather systems that propagate eastward along the equatorial wave guide with phase speeds between 11 and 14ms . They are an important constituent of the convective envelope of the Madden-Julian oscillation (MJO), for which ocean-atmosphere interactions play a vital role. Hence, ocean-atmosphere interactions within CCKWs may be important ...

Models for Stratiform Instability and Convectively Coupled Waves

A simplified intermediate model for analyzing and parameterizing convectively coupled tropical waves is introduced here. This model has two baroclinic modes of vertical structure: a direct heating mode and a stratiform mode. The key essential parameter in these models is the area fraction occupied by deep convection, sc. The unstable convectively coupled waves that emerge from perturbation of a...

Simple models for the diurnal cycle and convectively coupled waves

This paper presents a study of the diurnal cycle of tropical precipitation and its interaction with convectively coupled waves in the context of simple models with crude vertical resolution. One and two baroclinic mode models are tested in both the context of a one-column model and the context of full spatial dependency that permits waves to propagate and interact with the diurnal cycle. It is ...

A Moisture-Stratiform Instability for Convectively Coupled Waves

A simple model of two vertical modes is constructed and analyzed to reveal the basic instability mechanisms of convectively coupled waves. The main novelty of this model is a convective parameterization based on the quasi-equilibrium concept and simplified for a model of two vertical modes. It hypothesizes 1) the approximate invariance of the difference between saturation moist static energy in...
